The Angel
She never asked to be an angel
Her soul was torn from her body
She thought eternity
So she went to him
But she never really left him
But it couldn't last forever this way
And so she faded away from him
He found someone else
She kept her distance
Years passed, many years passed
What would come next
And when she spoke the words
08/12/01
not that way
but in that moment
she knew it had to be
and she told him she loved him
and always would
she was so sorry to leave
but fell silent in his arms
and as she floated towards the heavens
she watched him
in his grief
that she never wanted to see
shadowing over him
and she was dying all over again
as he was out of her reach
would be a comfort
but now it was anything but
she'd so unwillingly left him behind
he was lost from her
like she was gone from him
and she couldn't stand it
she still needed him
one still, dark night
tearfully, thinking it would be
the final goodbye
and she pulled him close
into her glowing aura
that she wished she didn't have
only to be with him
she was always
finding her way back to his arms
if even for a moment
and in passing, a soft kiss
just to let him know she was there
she couldn't bear, wouldn't dare
let him forget that she still loved him
he had a life to live
in a world she'd painfully parted
and so, struggling, she told him,
"we're of two different worlds
I must leave you now
It's the last thing I want to do
but it's time for you to move on from my love"
but never stopped watching over him
he still meant everything to her
and she protected him from afar
she became his guardian angel
though she'd never meant to be
not in this way
but it was all she could do
he'd moved on, like she'd asked him to
though it hurt her so
and the night he was hers no more
the night he belonged to his new love
it rained
the tears of an angel
she'd lost him
as it became too hard to watch him so closely
and see what she used to have
and what might have been
though she remained youthful evermore
her eyes turned sad and lonesome with age
she no longer could believe
that eternity was a comfort
until finally it was his time
and as he lay there in that last hour
she was there
what was left of her strength, calming his pain
her breath easing him into the darkness
and she held him like she'd longed to
for one last time
neither could tell
but she'd promised herself
to give him what he'd given her
when she'd grown silent in his arms
and she told him she loved him
and always had, always would
she was far beyond ever letting go
that she'd hidden for so long
as he lived his life away from her
she cried upon his aching chest
and shook with the fear that this was the last time
and she was dying all over again
and it rained
the tears of an angel
This poem is very strongly based on a dream I had. However, as always, creativity sneaks in during writing... What was important for me to stress in this was the mood and the moral, so hopefully those are clear enough.
