"Seek out Gold on Sit on it"
Created 3/16-17/03.
[COMPUTER GRAPHICS] This picture was done for a "creative assignment" for my senior English class. We'd read both Beowulf and Grendel (the latter being my favorite by far), and we were supposed to create something (artwork, poetry, anything you wanted basically) that connected to either book. My favorite character from both works was the Dragon from Grendel. He sees everything--past, present, and future--and is utterly cynical and nihilistic. He tells Grendel that nothing really matters, to go on killing the humans as much as he likes, because it will all turn out the same in the end--he has seen it. However, his last words advised Grendel to "seek out gold and sit on it" (like he does). Given, the dragon is not a friendly or helpful being... he was fascinating to me, an intellectual gem. So here is a rendition of him... Of course this version is not really how I see him in my mind, but I'm not incredibly gifted at drawing what I see in my head. Anyways. My apologies that this is so big--the stained glass effect (his scales) get all screwed up if you make it smaller. That was a long explanation, I'll stop now. Oh wait, I lied! How I made it: I drew the basic outline of the dragon and background, scanned that, then colored it and used effects... The gold piles are made from tiling small pieces from images with dragons on gold piles... but yeah, this one was from scratch except the gold "tiling"... I'm rather pleased with it, that being said. Usually I can only make a decent piece by screwing up something that already exists. hah!
