This artwork is meant to symbolize the notion of being trapped inside a complex (haha) habitat, but at the same time being connected to something outside of that chaotic universe.
The Blue Men are in some kind of atmosphere, watched and somewhat controlled by three godlike presences (the swirling masses of burnt orange). The blue men are all connected to each other, as well as to the controllers of their world. However, the blue men somehow don't fit in this setting--they stand out, they are not meant to be confined and leashed in this way. And despite the overwhelming demands and tendencies of the world around them, the blue men are able to step outside of it enough to see the stars, which lie outside of the chaos. One by one, they lift their masks to truly see what lies beyond, and one can see the bright glimmer reflected in their eyes.
This concept is connected to our lives as we know it, as we constantly search for some greater meaning, some life essence that lies close but is often unattainable due to our physical and social confines. We may be mostly bound to the world we were born into, but it doesn't mean we can't open our proverbial eyes and catch glimpses of another world... It doesn't mean there is no divine (meant in a general sense) light that can fill us with purpose and beauty. We can take a moment and let chaos fade away for a while, so we can see what really matters in this life.
"the best part about being alive is the stars."
