This artwork is my first collaboration with BigEyesBlueSkin (aka Bebs) on the blueman.com message board. One day when I was sitting in class, I got really bored and starting sketching out a concept I had for a BMG artwork. I can't really draw, so it was a hideous piece of work, but the idea was there. I showed my picture to Bebs, we talked it over, and we decided it was definitely a do-able thematic artwork.
The main focus is the Blue Man who is reaching out to the viewer, inviting him or her to come into his world. He's actually stepped off his "stage" into the human world in order to do this. The Blue Man on the left has somewhat followed suit, but is careful to prevent the middle from going too far (notice the protective/guarding hand on middle's knee). These two have a strong connection, and the touching of their heads goes along with the way the Blue Men touch each other's faces during the show. Finally, the third blue man stands back more completely in the "realm of blue," acting as a strong and grounded hold for the other two.
So Bebs worked her magic and came up with the final drawing (which she then colored)... and it was up to me to create the environment and aura that surrounds the blue men. The blue haze is a calming, soothing world, heavily contrasted by the chaos in the foreground (the human world). The three lines of symbols are literally jibberish, but the four blurred symbols that sit in the blue haze spell out "love" (and I don't mean in a mushy romantic way). I added a glow to the Blue Man's hand to emphasize his invitation and its promise.
