This artwork was created specifically for Blue Man Group’s Complex Tour. The original photo is a shot from one of the shows.
This artwork was created for Matthew Banks, a Vegas Blue Man. He strikes me as being full of art and wonder, so this piece seems to suit him well. In the original picture, he is the blue man on the right, separate from the other two. That particular image looks almost like he’s dancing, which I love, because Matthew is the one to randomly bust-a-move during a show. He’s so energetic, almost frantic, that it’s always a joy to watch him romp around the stage. Up close, he is calm and deep, like the eye of his own storm. One only needs to look in his eyes to see through to his unique soul. The swirling, blending colors of this artwork reflect that abstract concept of inner workings...
In general, the work shows the blue men disrupting a patch of scenery, just by their presence. Blue Man also disrupts the world around him through shows and performances, causing a ripple of thought to progress through his audience, which acts as a vehicle to the outside world. In this piece, the blue men are wandering through some sort of reflected “miasma” (word credit there goes to BigEyesBlueSkin on the message board), a world of incoherent, intangible textures and colors. The blue men are almost industrious compared to their surroundings, and offer reference points with which one can balance the chaos. This translates from the page into the reality of Blue Man Group as well, as they may act as a sturdy handhold for people (like me!) in the midst of confusing social and progressive nonsense. The blue spots may also be seen as individual beings. The three in the upper left are together free, while the two pairs are confined by the gray “pretzels” of tubes. Perhaps this is an interpretation of the idea that the three blue men need each other to truly thrive.
